Beyond Tickets and Merch: Building a Third Revenue Pillar with Fan Membership

Articles Membership

For most clubs, the revenue conversation still starts and ends in the same two places: tickets and merchandise. Matchday income and retail have been the twin pillars of commercial strategy for decades, and for good reason – they’re tangible, well understood by the entire organization, and easy to forecast against a fixture list. But that thinking also has a ceiling. Ticket revenue is capped by stadium capacity and results. Retail is capped by how much a fan is willing to spend on physical goods, and how often. After all, you can only buy so many of the latest season’s kit.

Both are also entirely dependent on the fan showing up, either at the ground or at the till. The fans who don’t – who watch from another country, follow from their phone, or support a club they’ll never physically visit will contribute nothing to either pillar, no matter how devoted they are.

The Value of Recurring Revenue

That’s the revenue gap that fan membership is built to close. Rather than asking fans to buy something once, a membership model asks them to belong to something continuously. It reframes the relationship from transactional to ongoing, and in doing so, opens up a revenue stream that isn’t tied to a seat in the stadium or a shirt in a cart. A fan who pays £5 a month for insider access, behind-the-scenes content, and a closer connection to the club is contributing revenue every single month, regardless of whether they ever attend a match or buy a product. That’s not a replacement for tickets and retail — it’s a third pillar standing alongside them, and it behaves completely differently to the other two.

The financial value of that difference is significant. Ticket and retail income are inherently lumpy: they spike around fixtures, dip in the off-season, and swing with form and results. Membership revenue, by contrast, is recurring. It arrives on a predictable schedule, independent of whether the team is winning, losing, or between seasons entirely. For clubs operating on tight margins — which is most of them outside the very top tier — that predictability has real operational value. It’s income that can be planned around, not just hoped for.

Building this pillar doesn’t require clubs to compete with their own ticketing or retail operations, and it shouldn’t be treated as though it does. The strongest membership programs are additive: they layer exclusive access, content, and connection on top of what a club already offers, rather than trying to replace it. A season ticket holder can still be a member. A fan who’s never bought a shirt can still be a member. The product being sold isn’t a seat or a garment – it’s proximity to the club itself, and that’s something almost every fan, at some level, is willing to pay for.

Platforms to Manage Fan Membership

What makes this shift practical is the platform layer that powers it. Historically, building a membership operation meant clubs needed the technical resource to handle recurring billing, content delivery, renewals, and fan communication – all resources that most clubs, especially outside the elite tier, simply don’t have. Fan membership and engagement platforms like Plus.Fan exist specifically to remove that barrier, giving clubs a turnkey way to launch, price, and manage membership without adding headcount or technical debt. That’s what turns “we should probably explore membership” into a program that can go live in days rather than years.

Realizing Fan Value

The clubs that get ahead here won’t be the ones with the biggest stadiums or the biggest kit deals — they’ll be the ones that stop treating their fanbase as a ticket-buying, shirt-buying audience and start treating it as a membership base. Tickets and merch will remain essential. But they were never designed to capture the full value of fan loyalty, and for the first time, clubs have a straightforward way to build the pillar that does.
